Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s Test captain with immediate effect, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said.

In a letter to the national Selection Committee, de Silva said he believes it is time for the next generation to lead the Test side. “It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” he said.

The all-rounder said he remains available to play for Sri Lanka.

SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva thanked him for his leadership and wished him well for the rest of his career. The board welcomed his continued availability for selection.

SLC has not yet named a new Test captain.
