Appointment letters will be handed to 1,540 new Grade III Grama Niladhari officers at Temple Trees in Colombo on Thursday morning, Public Administration Minister Prof. Chandana Abayarathna said.
The event will be held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, after the publication of the new Grama Niladhari Service Minute.
The minister said the recruitment relied strictly on examination results and interviews. He said it should ease rural officer shortages, where a single Grama Niladhari has had to cover several divisions.
Abayarathna said preparations are under way to recruit more than 1,500 additional officers next year. He also said the uniform allowance has been raised from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000.
Grama Niladhari officers are the main link between villages and the state, handling local administrative work for residents.
Cabinet approved the recruitment on 26 May 2025, and applications were called through Gazette No. 2460 on 24 October 2025.
