Two establishments in Pettah have been fined a total of Rs. 200,000 for offering electrical accessories for sale without the mandatory SLS certification, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000 on each after they pleaded guilty to charges filed by the CAA. One was charged over 98 AC/DC 12V adapters and the other over 200 packs of multifunction LED lights.
The CAA said the case was brought under Direction No. 63, which has applied since 1 January 2019. It bars the sale of specified electrical accessories of up to 250V unless they carry the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) certification mark.
The authority said the rule covers only specified items, including certain plugs, socket outlets, extension cords, adapters and cable reels, and not every electrical product.
Consumers are advised to check for the SLS mark and ask for a receipt. Traders selling non-compliant goods can be reported to the CAA hotline on 1977.
