“Sri Lankan Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus Meets Former NZ PMs Jacinda Ardern and Helen Clark During Study Visit”
During their study visit to New Zealand, the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus of Sri Lanka had a valuable meeting with former Prime Ministers Jacinda Ardern and Helen Clark. Discussions centered around empowering women’s leadership in politics and advancing gender diversity. Jacinda Ardern, who led New Zealand from 2017 to 2023, shared insights into managing economic crises, political challenges, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Key topics for female parliamentarians included policies supporting women re-entering the job market, wage equality, and parental leave.
Helen Clark, New Zealand’s first female Prime Minister, recounted her political journey and highlighted efforts to empower women, including civil marriage reforms and retirement savings encouragement. The Caucus was also treated to a cultural event representing New Zealand’s ‘Maori’ community as part of the warm welcome.
