Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne certified the Promotion of Export Agriculture (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday, making it Act No. 24 of 2026.

The law amends the Promotion of Export Agriculture Act of 1992. It renames the head of the department as Director-General and creates posts of Additional Director-General, Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director.

It also widens the definition of an export agricultural crop to cover crops with export potential that are also used locally. Paddy, vegetables, fruits, root crops, certain other food crops and traditional plantation crops are expressly excluded.

Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha presented the Bill to Parliament on 7 August.

The Act takes its place in the statute book once certified by the Speaker.
