A nine-storey surgical ward complex is planned for Tangalle Base Hospital in the Hambantota District of the Southern Province, at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.09 billion, according to the Ministry of Health.
The ministry said construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026 and will be carried out in four phases.
Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni discussed the project with hospital officials during an inspection visit on Wednesday. The talks also covered a five-storey medical ward complex to ease space limitations, and a CT scanner and other equipment for the hospital.
The 339-bed hospital is one of the main government health institutions serving the district. The Deputy Minister also reviewed staff shortages and ambulance facilities.
Wijemuni said the work would be done in coordination with the relevant Provincial Council, with financial support from the Central Government.
