The ruling National People’s Power (NPP) has proposed referring the no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne to the Attorney General for consideration and recommendations, the Daily Mirror reported, citing informed sources.

The proposal comes after Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake told Parliament at earlier sittings that the Government was ready to debate the motion as soon as it was formally submitted and included in the Order Paper.

A no-confidence motion against a Speaker must be debated in Parliament before any vote, so a referral to the Attorney General could affect when the motion is taken up. No date for a debate has been announced.
