Buddhist monks have refused to leave a sit-in outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, where they are demanding the release of the imprisoned Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, after talks with presidential officials on Thursday.

Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake met the protesting monks. According to the protesters, officials told them at least one month would be needed to decide on the matter.

The monks said they were not satisfied with that reply. They said they would continue the protest until the government announces the monk’s release.

The group travelled to Colombo in heavy rain before sitting down on the road outside the Secretariat.

For readers in the capital, the sit-in may affect traffic and access around the Presidential Secretariat while it continues.

The President’s Office has made no official announcement on the outcome of the discussions.
