The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court has handed a five-year suspended prison sentence to a man known as “Dubai Sudda”, identified as Ranthathige Nisshanka Priyadarshana, in a foreign employment fraud case.
The court also fined him Rs. 100,000 and ordered him to pay Rs. 700,000 in compensation to the complainants. The case was filed by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).
According to the Bureau, he was arrested after a resident of Giriulla complained that he had obtained Rs. 700,000 on a promise of a job in Dubai and failed to provide it. He was accused of using tourist visas and social media to run the scheme.
The Bureau said he was arrested in the Kaduwela area while allegedly trying to evade investigating officers. It said he is a United National Party member of the Bulathsinhala Pradeshiya Sabha and that similar cases against him are pending before the Welisara and Kaduwela courts.
The SLBFE urged the public to be cautious of anyone who asks for money in return for overseas jobs on tourist visas. Complaints can be made on the hotline 1989 or 011 288 2229.
