The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court has imposed fines totalling Rs. 240,000 on two traders in a case filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
The cases involved a fancy shop in Bandarawela and a home appliances shop in Nittambuwa. The CAA said its Badulla District officers found locally made 1.2-litre reusable plastic bottles on sale at Rs. 295 each without the required SLS 1616 certification mark during a raid on 24 September.
The retailer was charged with selling the uncertified bottles. The manufacturing company was charged with producing and distributing them in breach of standards. The retailer also faced charges over uncertified electrical extension cords and over not charging for shopping bags, as required by Extraordinary Gazette No. 2492/29 of 10 June 2026.
The defendants pleaded guilty on 7 October, the CAA said.
The authority urged consumers to check SLS certification marks and electrical ratings on items such as reusable bottles and extension cords, and reminded traders of their legal obligations.
