Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama on Tuesday ordered Shiranthi Rajapaksa to be further remanded until 16 October in a case over Rs. 10 million allegedly misappropriated from the ‘Siriliya Saviya’ account.

Rajapaksa is accused of misappropriating the money, which was transferred from the National Savings Bank to the account in 2010. The allegation relates to a written request purportedly made by her to obtain a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.

The court was told that the Prisons Superintendent had written to the Director of the Colombo National Hospital under an earlier court order. The Deputy Director of Health Services then submitted a three-page medical report to court.

The Magistrate said the report did not indicate that Rajapaksa was undergoing open-heart surgery or that such surgery had been recommended.

A medical panel has been appointed to assess her health. The Magistrate ordered the panel to submit its report to court on Friday, when he will announce whether bail will be granted.
