Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for immediate amendments to laws and regulations to protect the dignity and religious attire of Buddhist monks.
He spoke after meeting Most Ven. Omare Kassapa Anunayake Thera, Senior Deputy Prelate of the Sri Rohana Chapter of the Siamopali Maha Nikaya, at the Ilangamgoda Purana Raja Maha Viharaya in Sapugoda, Kamburupitiya.
Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) had already submitted a proposal to amend the relevant regulations. He said Buddhism holds the foremost place under the Constitution, and that other religions and communities must also be respected.
He objected to proposals to appoint committees that would take two weeks to examine the matter, saying the information could be gathered within 24 hours. He said the SJB would apply the maximum possible pressure for the changes.
