Amidst speculation surrounding a potential political collaboration, Opposition Parliamentarian Nimal Lanza has downplayed the rumors, citing them as mere “gossip.” Lanza refrained from commenting extensively on the matter, stating that it is premature to provide details.
Recent media outlets have suggested that Lanza is in the process of forming a novel political alliance, gaining support from both Government and Opposition MPs. The Daily Morning reached out to Lanza for clarification; however, he revealed that any official announcements regarding the speculated alliance would not be disclosed before September 2023. He emphasized that most of the information circulating currently is unsubstantiated hearsay.
As per emerging reports, a number of Opposition MPs and individuals dissatisfied with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) initiatives have engaged in discussions with Lanza. These conversations have reportedly led to the prospect of a new political alliance formation. Additionally, it was indicated that President and United National Party Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was informed of these deliberations, and the alliance’s formation could potentially bolster Wickremesinghe’s candidacy in the upcoming Presidential Election.
Opposition MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, acknowledged to have participated in meetings regarding this venture, clarified that their conversations are focused on devising a comprehensive political alliance aligned with current political trends. However, Yapa stressed that leadership roles within the alliance remain undecided, and decisions on this matter are slated for the future. “Our discussions stem from the country’s current needs and are not indicative of opposition towards any particular individual,” Yapa stated.
In summary, Nimal Lanza’s stance on the speculated political alliance underscores the importance of waiting until September 2023 for concrete announcements. As discussions continue among Opposition MPs and those dissatisfied with the SLPP’s policies, the potential alliance’s structure and leadership are topics that will be determined in due course.
